Freight Handling Assistant
Job Summary of Freight Handling Assistant:
The role of a Freight Handling Assistant revolves around the movement of goods to and from trailers in a dock area for the purpose of loading cargo. This position requires individuals to handle freight and materials within warehouse or distribution environments. Duties include unloading shipments, organizing inventory, storing items, and preparing orders for shipment or delivery.
Responsibilities of Freight Handling Assistant:
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including but not limited to: forklift, pallet jack and hand truck.
• Verify documentation matches freight description (e.g. type, weight, hazardous materials), using current electronic or manual system.
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (e.g. pallets, straps, rope).
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.Verify and complete required documentation and reports.Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.
• Perform hostling duties if required.
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
• Perform other duties as required.
Qualification of Freight Handling Assistant:
• A high school diploma is the preferred educational requirement.
• You must have attained the age of 18 or above.
• Having worked in warehousing, freight handling, or forklift operations before is a plus.
• Experience is a plus for individuals applying for positions that involve hostler/yard mule duties.
• Capability in numerical calculations and counting, with or without the aid of a calculator. Essential competencies in expressing ideas through writing and speaking.
• Skill in lifting and transporting manual freight of varying weights multiple times a week, raising dock plates weighing roughly 100 pounds, and opening trailer doors that require approximately 75 pounds of lifting effort, several times per day or more.
• Skill to flex, rotate, squat, and transport merchandise throughout the duration of the job.
• Strong ability to operate independently and effectively contribute to team projects. Previous experience in dock/warehouse environments is preferred.
Working Conditions of Freight Handling Assistant:
• Those in a dock atmosphere are exposed to fluctuating weather, vehicle exhaust, airborne particles, and elevated noise levels.
• There will be frequent interactions with employees at the service center
