Role Overview: Delivering Exceptional Housing Standards

As a Housing Standards Officer, you will play a pivotal role in promoting independence within the homes of disabled and vulnerable residents by administering the Disabled Facility Grant and Discretionary Assistance process. You will foster strong relationships with customers, contractors, landlords, and other agencies to ensure customers' needs are understood and met, resulting in a safe and dignified environment that enables them to remain independent. Additionally, you will undertake housing inspections associated with Houses in Multiple Occupation and respond to complaints about housing conditions in both the private rented and social housing sectors.

Key Responsibilities: Driving Excellence in Housing Standards

  • Delivering Grant Assistance: Provide timely and effective grant assistance, including Disabled Facility Grants, by supporting customers through the application process and ensuring they receive high-quality adaptations and experiences.
  • Conducting Inspections and Investigations: Investigate and carry out inspections related to housing standards, particularly those associated with the licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation, and respond to complaints about housing conditions in both the private rented and social housing sectors.
  • Applying Enforcement Legislation: Utilize appropriate enforcement legislation to ensure compliance with housing standards, working closely with customers, contractors, and landlords to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Collaborating with the Housing Standards Team: Work in tandem with other staff and management within the Housing Standards team to ensure the continuous delivery of high-quality environmental health services to customers.

Essential Qualifications and Skills: The Ideal Candidate

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • A qualification (e.g., BTEC, HND) in surveying, Environmental Health, or another housing-related subject, demonstrating a strong foundation in the principles of housing standards.
  • Up-to-date expert technical knowledge of construction, ensuring you're well-versed in the latest developments and best practices.
  • Recent experience in carrying out inspections and applying current housing standards, showcasing your ability to effectively assess and address housing-related issues.
  • The ability to interpret specialist information, such as technical plans, drawings, and specifications, highlighting your attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage your workload efficiently and effectively, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to effectively engage with members, officers, and the public, ensuring seamless collaboration and exceptional customer service.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills: Enhancing Your Application

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as Environmental Health or Building Surveying, demonstrating a higher level of academic achievement.
  • Experience in a similar role, preferably within a local authority or housing organization, showcasing your understanding of the sector and relevant challenges.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, such as the Housing Act 2004, highlighting your expertise and ability to apply regulatory standards.
  • Proficiency in using software applications, such as housing management systems, demonstrating your technical skills and adaptability.
