Job Overview and Responsibilities
The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and therefore must represent Mercy with the highest standard of customer service, compassion, and perform all duties in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy service standards. As a key member of our contact center team, you will facilitate all components of the patients' entrance into any Mercy facility, including scheduling, registration, benefit verification, pre-certification, and financial clearance, including pre-visit collection. Your exceptional attention to detail and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, as well as federal, state, and accreditation agencies, will ensure that the most accurate patient data is obtained and populated into the patient record.
- Schedule appointments and procedures for patients, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing wait times.
 - Conduct registration and benefit verification, ensuring accuracy and completeness of patient information.
 - Perform pre-certification and financial clearance, including pre-visit collection, to ensure seamless patient access to care.
 - Establish and maintain positive working relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and non-clinical hospital staff, and insurance companies.
 - Maintain knowledge and competence with various computer systems, insurance plans, and medical terminology.
 - Work under stress, meet deadlines, and perform all daily assignments with a high level of accuracy.
 
Essential and Preferred Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 1-3 years of clerical experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
 - High School diploma required; some college education helpful.
 - Experience with medical terminology and insurance plans preferred.
 - Excellent communication and telephone etiquette skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
 - Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
 - Knowledgeable and experienced with various computer systems, including the ability to use a 10-key calculator and computer keyboard.
 
Preferred qualifications include experience in a contact center or customer service environment, as well as familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and practice management systems.
