Job Summary

The Specialty Instructor is responsible for leading classes in a specialized program area, such as dance, yoga, martial arts, arts and humanities, safety and certification courses, including lifeguard training. The ideal candidate will have formal training in their specialty area, excellent communication skills, and the ability to motivate and engage participants of all ages.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and instruct progressive classes in a specialty area, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • Observe and discuss individual progress with participants, providing feedback and guidance to help them achieve their goals.
  • Motivate and guide class and program participation, promoting a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Set up and take down class equipment, reporting any equipment problems or concerns to management.
  • Ensure safe and effective classes, responding to and reporting any accidents or incidents.
  • Provide excellent customer service to members and program participants, fostering a sense of community and promoting member wellness.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught.
  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED within 30 days of hire.
  • Prerequisite certifications when necessary (e.g., lifeguard training).
  • Demonstrated customer service and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to individually lead a class and motivate participants.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to set up, move, and store class equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • 1+ year of experience teaching in the specialty format being taught.
  • Certification in the program area, such as fitness, aquatics, or sports.

Skills and Competencies

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including children and adults.
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Physical ability to stand on feet for majority of work shift, stretch, bend, and lift up to 50lbs, and move heavy equipment.
