About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Online Counsellor to join our helpline team, providing immediate counselling support to our callers. As a Helpline Counsellor, you will work remotely from home, with the flexibility to choose from a variety of shifts. You will be part of a supportive team, with access to clinical supervision, training, and CPD opportunities. Once you have completed 6 months on the helpline, you will have the option to provide short-term counselling sessions, offering variety and the opportunity to work towards accreditation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate, in-the-moment counselling support to callers, answering queries and offering guidance on mental health and wellbeing.
  • Conduct structured mental health assessments to inform clinical decision-making and ensure the best possible outcomes for callers.
  • Deliver high-quality services, adhering to your governing body's code of practice and ethical guidelines, and ensuring compliance with our quality standards.
  • Work collaboratively with our interventions team to provide ongoing support to callers, where required.
  • Participate in team meetings, clinical supervision, and training sessions, as scheduled, to maintain and develop your skills and knowledge.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • A recognised Counselling Qualification, ideally a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling (Level 4 or above).
  • BACP (or equivalent - NCS Accredited Professional status is also accepted) Registered Membership, with a preference for those working towards accredited status.
  • Previous experience of working in a similar role, with a strong understanding of mental health and wellbeing principles.
  • Self-motivation and confidence in remote working, with the ability to cover agreed shift patterns.
  • Competent IT skills, including experience of MS Office and MS Teams.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

While not essential, the following qualifications and experience are desirable:

  • Previous experience of working overnight or in a similar shift pattern.
  • Experience of working in a helpline or call centre environment, providing immediate support to callers.
  • Knowledge of mental health assessments and clinical decision-making frameworks.

  • Strong active listening skills, with the ability to empathise with callers and understand their needs.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a remote team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and make informed decisions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
