About the Role

We're seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Scientist to fill an immediate opening for a remote position with Walgreens, a leading name in the healthcare industry. As a Data Scientist - RWE, you'll be responsible for analyzing complex data sets, developing insights, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive business growth and improve patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities


  • Mine and normalize raw data sets from various sources, including in-house data resources and licensed platforms, to deliver high-quality, analysis-ready patient cohorts.

  • Collaborate with Walgreens Clinical Trial colleagues to derive meaningful insights from real-world, clinical, and other data sources, supporting biopharmaceutical RWE and clinical trial requests.

  • Clean, transform, and store data in an integrated data lake for future analysis and broader team utilization.

  • Perform advanced data mining and statistical analysis to uncover new insights into patient populations and treatment outcomes.

  • Support the development of real-world data, analytics, and platform capabilities, applying advanced analytics and tools to address scientific questions from biopharmaceutical companies.

  • Co-develop study designs and execution plans for outcomes research studies.

  • Ensure high-quality, rigorous, and interpretable outputs from RWE studies and analyses.

  • Create dashboards, analyses, and reports for internal and external use.

  • Conduct due diligence on new real-world data suppliers and vendors, driving RWD quality assessments to inform project decisions.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you'll need:


  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in a quantitative or computational field, such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, or engineering.

  • At least 3 years of experience in a quantitative or computational role, with a strong background in data analysis and interpretation.

  • 4+ years of experience with programming languages such as R, Python, or SQL.

  • Experience designing and executing robust and reproducible statistical analyses in the context of epidemiology and observational research with healthcare data.

  • Knowledge of common statistical testing methods, including generalized linear models, classification and regression, decision trees, unsupervised learning, time-series analysis, and survival analysis.

  • Experience handling large datasets from multiple sources.

  • Experience working with protected patient health information.

  • Familiarity with at least one Business Intelligence (BI) tool, such as Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, or Spotfire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD or graduate degree in a relevant field, such as statistics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, or biomedical engineering.

  • Proficiency in EMR/Health IT, disease libraries, and insurance claims datasets.

  • Knowledge of clinical data standards, clinical terminologies, and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies (e.g., ICD9/10/ReadCode).

  • Experience with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and/or regulatory compliance guidelines for real-world evidence studies or clinical trials.

  • Experience working with alternative data sources and methods for clinical data collection, particularly those enabled by technology platforms and/or devices.

  • Experience with study design, Bayesian modeling, longitudinal data, and computational statistics.

  • A strong understanding of statistics and machine learning techniques, with a commitment to ongoing self-learning and professional development.
