Founded in 1876, The Boys' Club of New York (BCNY) is a renowned youth development organization dedicated to empowering boys and young men, ages 7 to 21, through effective programs and a supportive community. With a rich history and a commitment to addressing the evolving needs of its members, BCNY is seeking an experienced and passionate Dance Teaching Artist to join its team in Flushing, NY.

About the Role

As a Dance Teaching Artist at BCNY, you will play a vital role in shaping the lives of young people through the power of dance and performance. You will lead engaging art classes, plan and implement age-appropriate programs, and foster confidence, self-expression, and creativity in our members. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and practice in dance and performance
  • Encourage participation, collaboration, and creativity among members, adapting teaching techniques and materials to meet their needs
  • Use various teaching mechanisms, such as improvisation, speech drills, and movement exercises, to teach dance styles, character development, and personality projection
  • Ensure effective classroom management, supervision, and safety of members, creating an enjoyable, challenging, and meaningful experience
  • Review instructional content, methods, and student performance to develop recommendations for curriculum revision, development, and/or elimination
  • Complete and submit all relevant reports, including supply requests, lesson plans, and timesheets
  • Maintain proper care of all area materials, organize the room, and report any misused or damaged materials to the Art Director
  • Attend required department meetings and professional development trainings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • At least 2 years of relevant training or experience in facilitating middle school or high school youth performing arts programs
  • Experience with various theater/dance forms, including improvisation, acting/playwriting, and/or stage movement
  • Demonstrated leadership in an educational, social service, and/or youth development setting
  • The ability to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting
  • Flexibility, creativity, and self-assuredness

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Experience working with diverse populations and ages 7-21
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and practices

Compensation and Benefits

This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a competitive hourly rate of $30.00.
