Job Summary
As an Associate Counsel with GEICO Staff Counsel, you will be responsible for defending lawsuits filed in Louisiana courts and other first-party insurance defense matters. You will work closely with our Claims Department to research laws, prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and render opinions on liability, damages, and value. If you have a strong background in litigation, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to defend lawsuits filed in Louisiana courts and other first-party insurance defense matters
 - Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
 - Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
 - Defend matters assigned by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
 - Document files in a clear, concise, and professional manner
 - Follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and prioritize tasks effectively
 - Learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
 
Essential Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
 - Admission to the Louisiana Bar and licensure in good standing to practice law in Louisiana
 - 2-6+ years of experience in related field litigation, including insurance defense and/or personal injury
 - Strong understanding of Louisiana courts and laws
 - Excellent communication, writing, and analytical skills
 - Ability to work independently and as part of a team
 - Strong organizational and time management skills
 
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience
 - Insurance defense-related litigation experience
 - Experience with complex litigation and trial proceedings
