This paid, part-time (15 - 20 hours per week) position offers flexible work hours to accommodate student class schedules. Rate of pay is commensurate with education and experience. This is a real-world work experience that is intended to enrich and complement the academic experiences of undergraduate and graduate students with a concentration in labor and human resources, business administration, communications and marketing, entrepreneurship, or a related field of study. This is NOT a remote work opportunity; the job is sited off-campus at Innovation Park in State College, PA through Penn State University. This position requires regular, in-person interaction with the team located in our State College, PA office. The HR Intern will work with experienced leaders in human resources, business operations, and management on a wide range of routine tasks and duties such as preparing and distributing job postings, screening applications, arranging meetings and/or interviews, conducting reference checks, and other activities related to talent acquisition. Other general responsibilities associated with this position include but are not limited to preparing correspondence, forms, and/or reports, handling and safeguarding confidential information, and calendar/file management. What sets this HR Intern role apart is the opportunity to participate in driving the success of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant that has been awarded to Ben Franklin/CNP. Known as the Central PA Graduate Retention Initiative, this Program aims to increase the competitiveness of emerging technology companies in the region to attract career-ready graduates from the region’s institutions of higher education (IHE) and develop a pipeline of students seeking to work for such companies through the IHE’s Career Services professionals. The HR Intern will work in partnership with student and alumni groups, career service professionals, local businesses, and economic development partners on various outreach and engagement activities that have a measurable impact on the success of this Program. Examples of the type of activities the HR Intern will handle in this role include but are not limited to: Communications: Using phone, electronic/digital technologies (e.g. zoom, google meetings, etc.), in-person meetings, or other means of communication, work in partnership with the senior HR professional to connect with targeted employers, IHE professionals, student groups, community leaders, and others to introduce the Program: gain buy-in; conduct needs assessments; help targeted employers build their employment brand and also build job inventory; develop a talent pipeline; schedule and participate in resume builder/reviewer activities, mock interviews, and assist as needed in other activities to foster active, continued engagement in the Program, solve problems, or identify opportunities for improved services or support. Collaborate with others to help create and administer gig and full course internships; support other innovative professional development opportunities for career-ready students. After completing relevant training, acts on or processes routine requests for information and/or assistance from internal and external stakeholders concerning the Program. Project Management and Event Planning: Depending on the event, assist the senior HR professional with event management or serve as the lead event coordinator; this involves working closely with other management and regional staff associates to plan, coordinate, and deliver a wide variety of high-quality programs. Responsibilities can range from developing (or assisting in the development of) the project work plan to working with marketing professionals to write, edit, publish and distribute event-related materials such as instructions, guidelines, press releases, and/or to coordinate the public relations and marketing efforts of other staff associates and/or vendors; shooting troubleshooting and developing solutions for challenges that can arise at any point during an event, conducting a thorough project review; documenting and archiving results for reference to assembling and communicating with a strong, diverse coalition of organizations and public figures from each community, securing their cooperation, support, and action to promote the Program. For student-centric events, such as career fairs, this role also serves as the primary point of contact to assist targeted employers in setting up virtual events/booths using Handshake, Brazen, or other event management software, assisting with online registration, and scheduling or providing other event management support, as needed. Data Compilation, Assimilation, Analysis, and Reporting: Perform routine data entry; conduct routine to moderately complex research; and compile/format data to produce a variety of routine to moderately complex reports, spreadsheets, or presentations. At the direction of the senior HR professional, uses a variety of techniques to effectively research, identify, and target business leaders and other organizations (such as non-profits) to participate as employers in this Program; likewise, the HR Intern also researches, identifies, and targets outreach to the most likely IHE professionals and student groups, community leaders, and others who can play an active role in advancing this mission and ensuring the success of this Program. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Junior - Senior level Bachelor’s degree student making progress towards an undergraduate or master’s degree from an accredited college or university; the focus of study in Human Resources and Employment Relations, Labor and Employment Relations, Organizational Leadership, Leadership Development, Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Accounting, Business, Business Administration, Project Management, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Digital Journalism and Media, Journalism, Organizational and Professional Communication, Strategic Communication, or related field is strongly preferred. High comfort level with technology, software, and spreadsheets. “Day-1 Expert-level” proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, digital/electronic, diagram, or schedule form. Background and reference checks will be performed; results must be satisfactory to the organization. Effective in-person and virtual social skills and expert knowledge of a variety of social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Ability and willingness to actively engage in virtual and in-person events/presentations. Effective, persuasive, and compelling communication skills are critical as are strong problem-solving and time management skills.
