About the Role
We're excited to offer a unique opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Support Worker (Higher Level) in Microbiology. This role is based at our state-of-the-art laboratory facility at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, where you'll play a critical part in delivering a comprehensive Microbiology service to the population of Greater Glasgow & Clyde. As a Clinical Support Worker, you'll be responsible for a range of duties, including the collection and preparation of materials and clinical specimens for analysis, registering patient-related information onto the Laboratory Information System, and providing assistance to Biomedical Scientists.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and prepare materials and clinical specimens for analysis, ensuring safe disposal of clinical waste.
- Register patient-related information onto the Laboratory Information System or other manual systems.
- Work within Specimen Reception, dealing with telephone queries from staff from other departments and external agencies.
- Provide assistance to Biomedical Scientists for the provision of the laboratory service.
- Perform specific laboratory tests as required.
- Work as part of the laboratory out of hours system, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
To be considered for this role, you'll need:
- 3 Highers at Grade C or above (one of which should include either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths) or SVQ3 in a relevant science subject or equivalent qualification.
- Completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences or equivalent accredited education/learning.
- The ability to achieve the mandatory inductions standards for healthcare support workers in Scotland and comply with the code of conduct throughout your employment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
While not essential, the following qualifications and skills will be considered advantageous:
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems.
- Experience of working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
