Department Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of Extension's Natural Resources Institute works at the intersection of communities, natural resources, and agriculture. Our North Central Region Water Network branded program is a 12-state extension-led collaboration dedicated to ensuring safe and sufficient water supplies across the North Central Region and beyond. Position Summary and Job Duties

As a Science Communication Project Assistant, you'll play a vital role in supporting communications and outreach projects for FEWscapes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Writing, editing, and project management for various communications materials, such as:
    • Blog posts and research briefs
    • Web pages and reports
    • Multimedia content (e.g., videos, social media posts)
  • Developing and implementing effective communication strategies to engage diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborating with project team members to ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communications channels
  • Contributing to the development of project reports, summaries, and other materials as needed
  • Participating in project meetings and providing input on communication-related aspects

Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate program at UW-Madison, with a focus on science communication, journalism, environmental studies, or a related field
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate complex information to non-technical audiences
  • Excellent organization and project management skills, with attention to detail and reliability
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with journalistic style writing and writing for online platforms (e.g., websites, blogs)
  • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro or other video editing software
  • Knowledge of science communication principles and best practices
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary research projects or teams
