Job Summary: HIM Protected Health Information Specialist

As a HIM Protected Health Information Specialist, you will serve as a primary source of support for our Health System, comprising 8 Acute Care Hospitals, over 50 Baptist Outpatient Services locations, and ambulatory surgical centers. Your expertise will be crucial in responding to requests for health information while maintaining the confidentiality of patients' protected health information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to requests from former patients, physicians, hospital staff, and other requestors for health information while preserving patient confidentiality.
  • Perform quality assessment reviews on the release of health information to ensure proper, complete, and accurate disclosure.
  • Answer phone calls and provide information in accordance with hospital policies, State and Federal law, HIPAA, and Information Blocking regulations while delivering exemplary customer service.
  • Collaborate with the team to meet Release of protected health information and department goals.
  • Travel to different sites for depositions or Court hearings as required.

Essential Qualifications:

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • A High School diploma or equivalent; an Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or a related field is preferred.
  • Certified Record Health Information Technician (RHIT) and/or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical chart format, and computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask and work independently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Equivalent experience in an acute care setting for a large healthcare organization.
  • High-volume telephone experience in a customer service-oriented setting.
