Job Overview

As an Inpatient Complex/Trauma Coder, you will play a critical role in reviewing, analyzing, and coding diagnostic and reportable procedures from patient medical records for reimbursement and billing purposes. Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze patient medical records to assign accurate codes for diagnostic and reportable procedures
  • Abstract information from medical records to compile a patient database, supporting medical research projects, patient care evaluation, and administrative decision-making
  • Ensure compliance with established coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation guidelines
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to promote provider-patient continuity and optimize reimbursement
  • Stay up-to-date with coding systems, guidelines, and regulations to maintain expertise and ensure accurate coding

Essential Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in Medical Record Sciences or successful completion of a certification program with certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Administrator (RHIA), or CCS Certified Coding Specialist
  • Minimum of five (5) years of inpatient coding experience and/or two (2) years of coding experience at a level one trauma hospital
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Administrator (RHIA), or CCS Certified Coding Specialist, or eligibility for certification

  • Previous experience working with electronic health records (EHRs) and coding software
