Job Overview

As a Bi-Lingual Literacy Instructor, you will play a vital role in developing and implementing our ESOL/ABE and Adult Literacy programs. You will work closely with our Literacy Coordinator to design and deliver adult basic education workshops, including ESL, basic English, computer, life skills, and workplace training. Your expertise and passion for teaching will enable you to create engaging and effective lesson plans, provide individualized support to students, and foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement adult literacy programs and services, including ESOL/ABE, in collaboration with the Literacy Coordinator
  • Design and instruct adult basic education workshops, including ESL, basic English, computer, life skills, and workplace training
  • Provide individualized support to students, including tutoring and mentoring
  • Develop and implement community outreach and recruitment strategies to increase program participation
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to promote literacy services and resources
  • Participate in training and evaluation of literacy teachers, volunteers, and interns
  • Assume responsibility for oral presentations and written reports on literacy services activities
  • Supervise and support professional and non-professional staff, as assigned

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university; Master's degree in adult literacy or Library & Information Science preferred
  • Two years of professional experience working with individuals or groups engaged in literacy education
  • Fluency in a second language other than English required; proficiency in additional languages preferred
  • Experience in literacy program development, outreach, and recruitment techniques
  • Strong knowledge of bibliographical tools and resources, including MS Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others, communicate effectively, and think creatively

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Experience working with community-based organizations and developing strong, interactive community relationships
  • Knowledge of book and non-print materials and specialized resources related to the literacy field
  • Experience with curriculum development and lesson planning for adult literacy programs
