Role Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Attorney with 4+ years of experience to handle a broad array of matters, including contracts, compliance, and litigation. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in non-profit law, real estate, fair housing, and social justice. As an In-House Counsel Attorney, you will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and play a critical role in providing legal advice and risk analysis to ensure the organization's compliance with federal and state statutes, regulations, and contracts.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with contracts, including review, negotiation, and drafting of contractual agreements
- Provide advice and risk analysis concerning the applicability of and compliance with all federal and state statutes, regulations, and contracts that may impact agency programs, policy operations, or spending activities
- Handle litigation before courts and relevant administrative bodies, including research, discovery, motions practice, and regular court appearances
- Collaborate with the CLO and other stakeholders to develop and implement legal strategies and policies
- Stay up-to-date with changes in laws, regulations, and industry trends, and advise the organization on potential impacts and opportunities
- Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, including law firms, government agencies, and community organizations
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- At least 4 years of experience as an attorney, preferably in a non-profit or public interest setting
- Admission to the Massachusetts Bar (or ability to become admitted within a reasonable timeframe)
- Significant experience with litigation, including research, discovery, motions practice, and court appearances
- Strong knowledge of non-profit law, real estate, fair housing, and social justice
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Experience working with non-profit organizations, particularly in the affordable housing and economic support sector
- Knowledge of Massachusetts state laws and regulations, including those related to housing and urban development
- Familiarity with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
- Experience with contract management and compliance
- Strong connections to the Western Massachusetts community
