Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Computer Science Tutor for SSS STEM and Peer Educator to join our team at Weber State University's Ogden campus. As a tutor, you will provide individualized support to WSU students participating in the SSS STEM program, focusing on Computer Science classes, including CS 2810 and above. Additionally, as a Peer Educator, you will offer intentional mentoring in key areas such as navigating campus resources, connecting to campus and community life, and preparing for graduation and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

Tutoring Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring to WSU students participating in the SSS STEM program in Computer Science classes, including CS 2810 and above.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the course materials and content.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages students to explore and understand complex concepts.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to convey detailed information and instructions to students accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student progress.

Peer Educator Responsibilities:

  • Offer intentional mentoring to students in one-on-one settings, focusing on the following areas:
    • Navigation of campus resources (financial aid, registration, wellness, etc.).
    • Connection to campus and community life (transition to college, making meaningful connections, participating in campus and community programs, etc.).
    • Preparation for graduation and beyond (resumes, leadership skills, communication skills, etc.).
  • Collaborate with university staff and faculty to ensure comprehensive support for SSS STEM students.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance mentoring and tutoring skills.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • A grade of B+ or higher in the Computer Science classes needed for tutoring.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to express complex ideas clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and identities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for the Federal Work Study Program (if applicable).
  • Previous experience in tutoring, teaching, or mentoring.
  • Familiarity with campus resources and services.
