Job Summary

As a Work-Study Undergraduate Peer Learning Consultant (Math/Stats Tutor), you will play a vital role in the UNT Dallas Learning Commons, providing tutorial assistance in math and statistics to students who need supplemental academic support. You will work under the supervision of administrative staff and collaborate with faculty in the relevant discipline to ensure that students receive the guidance they need to succeed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring to students in math and statistics, including clarification of course assignments, lectures, and tests
  • Work with students to develop positive learning skills, such as study techniques, notetaking skills, and test-taking strategies
  • Conduct face-to-face and online tutoring sessions with students individually or in small groups
  • Create a participatory learning environment that encourages active student involvement
  • Aid students in understanding concepts without giving answers or completing assignments for them
  • Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services and departments as needed
  • Work assigned hours per week, attend mandatory trainings, and participate in special assignments and projects
  • Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures to students, tutors, and visitors, and lead classroom presentations to promote Learning Commons services
  • Assist administrative staff with preparing resources, including handouts, workshops, website content, social media posts, and videos
  • Aid students in scheduling appointments for the Learning Commons and assist with data reports

Essential Qualifications

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Qualify as work-study eligible (determined by the Financial Aid office)
  • Be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward completion of a bachelor's degree program
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in math and/or statistics
  • Be recommended by a faculty member from the discipline in which you are applying to tutor
  • Possess excellent communication skills, including interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Demonstrate empathy and the ability to relate to the diverse student body population at UNT Dallas
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
  • Possess basic MS Office skills and the ability to operate a variety of office machines

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Ability to work 12-19 hours per week
  • Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University academic policy, procedure, and practices
  • Knowledge of FERPA
  • Ability to work under considerable pressure, adjust to constant changes, and handle multiple tasks
  • Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives
