The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a renowned global humanitarian organization that provides critical support to people affected by conflict, crisis, and displacement. Our NYC Youth Education Department is dedicated to providing year-round academic support, homework help, literacy training, English language learning, and enrichment activities to refugee and immigrant youth. We are seeking compassionate and skilled Youth Tutors to join our team as volunteers and make a meaningful difference in the lives of these young individuals.

About the Role

As a Youth Tutor (Volunteer) with the IRC, you will provide essential tutoring services to refugee and immigrant youth, mainly consisting of homework help, essay writing/editing, and English language development support. You will work with 1-3 students each day, tailoring your support to their individual needs and academic goals. This is a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the educational journey of these young individuals and help them overcome the challenges they face.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring services to refugee and immigrant youth, K-12, mainly consisting of homework help, essay writing/editing, and English language development support.
  • Work with 1-3 students each day, submitting a case note regarding each student's progress within 24 hours of the tutoring session.
  • Support students with diverse home language backgrounds and English language development levels.
  • Uphold full commitment to weekly schedule of tutoring sessions without absence or tardiness.
  • Complete and submit online Professional Development modules throughout the term via Google Classroom.
  • Create a linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed learning environment.
  • Uphold all IRC and program and child safeguarding policies and directives.
  • Communicate with IRC staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Complete assigned surveys and data tracking tasks.
  • Submit a weekly timesheet on Salesforce platform to track and codify IRC volunteer hours.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must:

  • Clear IRC background check by deadline to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations.
  • Complete and submit all IRC Youth tutor training modules by deadline.
  • Participate in IRC Youth Tutor online synchronous training.
  • Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and a strong commitment to education, particularly for youth who have experienced forced migration.
  • Show respect for clients and staff from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in an IRC high-frequency or high-need language is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Fluency in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Dari/Farsi, Pashto, Russian, Ukrainian, French, Garifuna, K'iche, Tigrinya, Amharic, Wolof, Bambara/Mandingo/Malinke, Urdu/Hindi, Arabic, Mixteco, Kichwa.
  • Experience working with refugee or immigrant youth.
  • Background in education or a related field.
