Key Responsibilities
As a Special Education Teacher - Long-Term Substitute, your key responsibilities will include:
- Adhering to due process guidelines and using district-recommended methods and instruments to evaluate and identify the special education needs of students
- Participating in team decisions regarding eligibility and facilitating evaluation plans and reports
- Serving as a case manager for students, developing and maintaining Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), facilitating IEP meetings, and providing parents and/or guardians with Rights and Procedural Safeguards information and notification of team meetings
- Providing direct instruction to students receiving special education and assisting them with attaining their IEP goals
- Collaborating with general education teachers to plan and implement curriculum, state and district-wide assessments
- Providing job performance feedback to, directing the work of, and supporting paraprofessionals in the implementation of students' IEP goals
- Maintaining data as required to monitor and evaluate student progress and communicating regularly with parents of students regarding progress of their child
- Advocating for the needs of students with disabilities and developing and implementing proactive and positive behavioral interventions based on Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) results
- Possessing knowledge and ability to utilize techniques to maintain a safe environment, such as MANDT, CPI, and building emergency plans
- Participating in relevant staff development opportunities, staying current with state rules and regulations governing special education, and collaborating with related service providers
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A valid MN teaching license in a special education field
- Ability to work collaboratively and positively with a multi-disciplinary team
- Knowledge and experience with due process procedures and excellent communication skills
- Experience with conflict resolution and training and experience in behavior management and crisis response
- A strong understanding of state and federal rules and regulations governing special education
- Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality per data privacy, MN Government Data Practices Act, FERPA, and HIPPA legislation
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Previous experience as a special education teacher or in a related field
- Knowledge of technology strategies and equipment available to students and ability to provide strategy information to general education teachers
- Experience with interagency collaboration and ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff, students, parents, and administration
- Familiarity with MANDT, CPI, and building emergency plans
- Ability to utilize conflict management strategies and resources for support when conflict occurs between staff and/or parents
