Experienced Bilingual Elementary Teacher - Dual Language Program - Grade 1 (2023-2024 School Year)

Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and skilled Bilingual Elementary Teacher to join our Dual Language Program at the Grade 1 level. As a dual language teacher, you will play a critical role in shaping the minds of our young students, teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. You will be responsible for teaching multiple classes of social studies, integrated with Spanish Language Arts in the target language, and collaborating with our English partner teacher to develop and implement a team teaching model.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach identified subjects in Spanish, maintaining the target language in an immersion setting
- Collaborate with English partner teacher to develop and implement team teaching model
- Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education and Biliteracy Unit Frameworks
- Manage the classroom and individual student behavior utilizing a restorative practices approach to maintain an advantageous learning environment
- Prepare lesson plans in collaboration with the team that achieve clear language and content objectives, use appropriate SIOP and biliteracy techniques, and serve the needs of all learners in the classroom
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required
- Conduct parent/teacher conferences with partner teacher(s)
- Design clear and specific learning assessments that capitalize on emergent bilinguals' abilities
- Work with the partner teacher to holistically assess emergent bilinguals' progress in both languages on an ongoing basis, and identify areas of intervention, if needed
- Use interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences to keep parents up-to-date regarding student progress in both languages
- Plan whole group, small group, and individualized instruction to foster academic, social, emotional, and cultural growth
- Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner
- Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior through the implementation of the PBIS framework
- Maintain ongoing communication with parents in either English or Spanish
- Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
- Accommodate visitors to the classroom as a dual language model classroom
- Establish and maintain professional relationships
- Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve biliteracy instructional practices and positively affect student achievement
Essential Qualifications
- CSD Active Bilingual PK-8 Education 902 OR CSD Active TESOL 111
- Active CT certification in Social Studies, Middle School required as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education
- Must be fluent in Spanish and English
- Experience working with children
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in the target language
- Effective, active listening skills
- Ability to work effectively with others in a close, collaborative environment
- Organizational and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the development of the emergent bilingual student
- Experience using strategies for second language learners such as SIOP, the Bridge, and other biliteracy strategies
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in dual language program preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate
