Job Overview and Responsibilities

As a Teaching Fellow for the EEI online course, you will play a crucial role in guiding high school students through their engineering journey. Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Being present and available during the entire course, including daily synchronous 3-hour sessions, and additional time for coordinating with the teaching team, grading student submissions, and holding occasional study sessions.
  • Preparing independently to review course materials and complete the online training program prior to the first day of the course to ensure comfort and familiarity with the curriculum.
  • Developing a sense of community among high school students participating in the class, in collaboration with the instructor, to foster an engaging and supportive learning environment.
  • Assisting students remotely as they conduct various activities throughout the course, including monitoring discussion boards and responding to student messages in a timely manner.
  • Hosting study session hours each week, ensuring all students have the opportunity to participate and receive additional support when needed.
  • Creating supplemental instructional materials, such as videos, to clarify lab setups or fill instructional gaps as necessary.
  • Assisting instructors in grading assigned work, providing detailed feedback to students, and ensuring grades are posted promptly to the learning management system.
  • Upholding child safety protocols to ensure a secure and respectful learning environment for all students.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a high school teacher in a STEM discipline, demonstrating excellent classroom management skills and the ability to relate complex concepts to students.
  • Availability to teach from June 26 to July 28, Monday through Friday, with each class meeting synchronously for a single 3-hour block at the same time each day.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or similar Learning Management Systems (LMS), as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom or similar video conferencing software.
  • Access to a remote/virtual work environment for training prior to the course and throughout its duration.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, which would provide a deeper understanding of the course material and enhance your ability to guide students.
