As a Part-time Apple and Peach Research Assistant, you will be an integral part of our research efforts, working closely with our team to design, implement, and analyze experiments related to sustainable orchard practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planting, pruning, and harvesting of apple and peach trees, ensuring optimal tree health and productivity.
- Conduct regular maintenance tasks, including monitoring tree health, managing pests and diseases, and maintaining equipment.
- Participate in fruit assessment activities, including evaluating fruit quality and preparing samples for laboratory analysis.
- Learn and apply laboratory techniques for analyzing soil and fruit samples, including data collection and recording.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects related to sustainable orchard practices, including data analysis and interpretation.
- Collaborate with team members to design and implement experiments, and present research findings at conferences and seminars.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Penn State University in good standing.
- Interest in sustainability and tree fruit production, with a willingness to learn and work in a dynamic outdoor environment.
- Valid US driver's license and means to commute to the orchard at Rock Springs.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions, with excellent organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
While not required, the following qualifications and skills are highly desirable:
- Previous experience working in an orchard or agricultural setting, with knowledge of tree fruit production and management practices.
- Familiarity with laboratory techniques and equipment, including data collection and analysis software.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and present research findings to diverse audiences.
- Experience with data analysis and interpretation, including statistical software and techniques.
