About the Role: Principal Engineer - Data Analytics & Data Science
The Principal Engineer in Data Analytics & Data Science at blithequark is a pivotal leadership role that oversees the strategic vision, design, and architecture of our data analytics and reporting landscape. This position is not just about technical leadership; it's about fostering a culture of innovation, mentoring a team of engineers, and driving the adoption of emerging technologies to stay ahead of the curve. As a key member of our IT team, you'll be instrumental in shaping our long-term technical strategy and ensuring that our data analytics capabilities are aligned with our organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
- Drive current software practices through design reviews and ensure the adoption of best practices in coding, testing, and deployment.
- Work on system design through clear interfaces across various components, code reviews, and using data/telemetry to determine the effectiveness of our services.
- Develop "top-tier" engineering for our services by ensuring that they are modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, easily monitored, and reusable.
- Improve test coverage for services; organize and implement integration tests; and resolve bottlenecks.
- Focus on business needs through a data-driven approach and explore and promote automation, reliability, and monitoring for distributed products.
- Set the strategic vision for data analytics and reporting, aligning with organizational objectives and providing leadership in guiding the overall direction of data analytics technical initiatives.
- Design, develop, and enhance complex data models and reporting structures, ensuring the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platforms specialists, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions.
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and skill development, leading technical authority discussions and sessions within the engineering community.
- Establish and enforce data quality standards and best practices, implementing processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy.
- Evaluate and select appropriate data analytics and reporting tools to meet business needs, leading requirement meetings and partnering closely with platforms and infrastructure teams during the evaluation and implementation of these tools.
- Monitor the performance of data analytics and reporting systems, providing technical authority to drive reliability and scalability of data products and reporting solutions.
- Implement measures to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues, providing strategic insights and recommendations based on data analytics to support decision-making at the organizational level.
- Utilize Azure services, such as Azure SQL DW, ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Cosmos, Databricks, Delta-Lake, to enhance and accelerate the delivery of our data products and services.
- Implement big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven track record with at least 15+ years of hands-on experience in data analytics and reporting roles.
- 5+ years of experience in leadership or senior roles, demonstrating the ability to effectively guide and lead a team.
- 5+ years of experience working with Cloud technologies, such as ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Cosmos DB, DBT, and other big data technologies.
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency in data analytics tools, languages, ML, and frameworks (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, SQL, Python, R).
- Proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools to effectively communicate insights.
- Demonstrated ability in working with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, to design and implement scalable and efficient data analytics solutions.
- In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for robust and scalable data management.
- Advanced SQL skills, with a strong understanding of relational databases and business intelligence, capable of writing complex SQL queries against various data sources.
- Experience handling high-volume and high-velocity data streams, and designing systems that can deal with the demands of real-time or near-real-time analytics.
- Experience in shaping the strategic vision for data analytics and reporting initiatives within an organization.
- Successful management of data analytics projects, including planning, execution, and delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices.
- Shown capacity to assume ownership and accountability of critical issues and see them through to resolution.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Science, or a related technical discipline.
- Relevant industry certifications are a plus.
- Experience in retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, or supply chain is desirable.
