Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Cross Categorical Itinerant Special Education Aide to join our team of dedicated educators. As a Cross Categorical Itinerant Special Education Aide, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, including physical, social-emotional, behavioral, self-help, and developmental deficits. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the care and tutoring of students with special needs, including those with physical, social-emotional, behavioral, self-help, and developmental deficits
  • Work in preschool, Intensive Resource (IR), or Extended Resource (ER) special education classrooms, depending on District needs
  • Develop and implement individualized support plans to meet the unique needs of each student
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to provide comprehensive support and guidance
  • Demonstrate empathy and understanding of the special needs of disabled children, including the ability to respectfully and appropriately communicate with physically and mentally disabled students
  • Participate in de-escalation training and crisis intervention techniques to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with students, staff, and parents, including the ability to calm students who are upset or angry, defuse conflict situations, and safely restrain out-of-control students who present a danger to self or others

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and have either completed or the ability to complete the ParaProfessional Assessment within four (4) months of hire
  • Associate's degree or higher
  • Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent

In addition to these qualifications, you must also:

  • Have an understanding of developmental disabilities and demonstrate proper lifting skills to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly
  • Possess a valid driver's license, use of a personal vehicle, and be able to gain access to military installations
  • Be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero
  • Have completed ASL I and ASL II if the posted vacancy lists a requirement for signing skills

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience working with students with special needs, particularly in a preschool or special education setting
  • Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas appropriate for age-level of students
  • Training in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention
  • Experience with individualized support plans and behavior intervention plans
