Job Summary

As a Parental Involvement Para, you will work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher to provide essential support to students with disabilities. Your duties will include assisting teachers in preparing instructional materials, maintaining administrative records, and providing orientation and assistance to substitute teachers. You will also work closely with students to develop motor skills, conduct instructional exercises, and provide personal care and support as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom, including inventory, care, and maintenance of classroom equipment
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning
  • Provide personal care and support to students, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
  • Help manage the behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom
  • Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a high school diploma or high school equivalent, as well as one of the following:

  • Completed two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (48 college credit hours with required courses)
  • Received an Associate’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • A minimum score of 450 on the ETS Parapro Exam

You will also need to demonstrate a strong commitment to professional conduct, including maintaining confidentiality and upholding safety rules and policies.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Previous experience working in a special education setting
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques and strategies
  • Experience working with students with physical disabilities
  • Proficiency in general use of a computer, email, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications
