As a Field-Based Consultant, you will play a critical role in improving the quality of care for Medicare Advantage Members by working closely with healthcare providers across assigned territories. Primary Responsibilities

In this dynamic and challenging role, you will be responsible for:

  • Traveling across assigned territories to meet with healthcare providers, including physicians, medical groups, IPAs, and hospitals, to discuss Optum tools and programs focused on enhancing the quality of care for Medicare Advantage Members
  • Utilizing data analysis to identify and target providers who would benefit from coding, documentation, and quality training and resources, with the goal of improving their RAF performance and coding specificity
  • Establishing positive, long-term, consultative relationships with healthcare providers and developing comprehensive, provider-specific plans to address gaps in documentation and coding
  • Managing end-to-end Risk and Quality Client Programs, including the Healthcare Patient Assessment Form, to ensure accurate payments and compliance with CMS standards
  • Providing feedback on EMR/EHR systems and consulting with provider groups on documentation and coding best practices
  • Partnering with a multi-disciplinary team to implement prospective programs and assisting providers in understanding Medicare quality programs and CMS-HCC Risk Adjustment payment methodologies
  • Developing and presenting coding presentations and training to large and small groups of clinicians, practice managers, and certified coders, as well as creating diagnosis coding tools and providing ICD-10 HCC coding training to providers and staff
  • Collaborating with internal and external personnel on Risk Adjustment and Quality education efforts and providing measurable, actionable solutions to providers to improve documentation and coding practices

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Healthcare or a relevant field, or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of ICD-10, HEDIS, and Stars, as well as proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Experience working with common office software, coding software, EMR, and abstracting systems
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination, as well as compliance with state-mandated COVID-19 booster doses, if applicable
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to work effectively with healthcare providers, staff, and internal teams

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Previous experience in a similar role, such as a Healthcare Consultant or Risk Adjustment Specialist
  • Strong understanding of Medicare Advantage programs, CMS regulations, and healthcare quality metrics
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation, as well as the ability to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
