Position Overview:
The Mid-Level Architectural Historian will be responsible for leading historical research, architectural surveys, evaluations, and the preparation of detailed reports and presentations. This role is designed for a professional with a deep passion for and background in architectural history and historic preservation, who is ready to take on more responsibility and leadership within project teams. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of expertise in historical methodologies, architectural documentation, and preservation laws and standards, guiding projects to successful completion with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct in-depth historical research and analysis on architectural styles, construction techniques, and cultural significance of properties.
• Lead field surveys to document historic properties, including detailed photography, sketching, and written descriptions.
• Evaluate and assess the historical significance of properties in accordance with local, state, and national criteria.
• Prepare and oversee the preparation of nominations for historic registers, including the National Register of Historic Places.
• Review architectural plans and specifications for restoration, rehabilitation, or adaptive reuse projects to ensure compliance with historic preservation standards and guidelines.
• Develop and manage preservation planning documents, heritage impact assessments, and conservation management plans.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, community stakeholders, and government agencies, managing relationships and ensuring clear communication.
• Mentor junior staff, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
• Contribute to proposals and business development efforts within the historical preservation sector.
Qualifications (Education and Experience):
• Bachelors degree required, Master’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Architecture, or a closely related field preferred.
• A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field.
• SOI qualified
• Project management experience preferred
• Demonstrated interest in Architecture and cultural heritage preservation.
• Demonstrated expertise in American and/or international architectural styles, historical construction techniques, and preservation practices.
• Proven ability to lead research projects, including fieldwork, archival research, and report writing.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in evaluating the significance of architectural resources.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce high-quality reports and presentations.
• Leadership qualities and experience managing or mentoring less experienced staff.
• Experience with GIS, CAD, and relevant software for architectural documentation and analysis preferred.
• Willingness to travel for fieldwork and site visits.
