Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and their peers and educators in various educational settings, including classrooms, meetings, and extracurricular activities.
  • Provide tutoring and academic support to deaf and hard of hearing students, adapting instruction to meet their individual needs and learning styles.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other support staff to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and ensure that deaf and hard of hearing students receive equal access to educational opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes socialization, self-advocacy, and self-esteem among deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students are met and that their progress is monitored.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in interpreting and tutoring for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following minimum employment requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following requirements:
    • Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) paraeducator assessment.
    • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
    • Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Provide proof of meeting the above requirements by uploading an official transcript or ETS score.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Previous experience working with deaf and hard of hearing students, either as an interpreter or tutor.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign languages used in the district.
  • Knowledge of deaf culture and the unique needs and challenges faced by deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Experience working in a remote or online environment, with strong technical skills and ability to adapt to new technologies.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders.

  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in video conferencing software and other online tools.
  • Knowledge of best practices in supporting deaf and hard of hearing students, including cultural competence and sensitivity.
