About the Job

In this role, you will predominantly organize and execute live-centered drives based on collaboration with the Live Streaming Pipeline Engineering Group, Live Local Technical Leads, and Production groups, as well as our Reliability Engineering teams. You will influence numerous areas of the live event lifecycle, from the pitch and planning stage to testing and event launch days. Your expertise will be crucial in leading development drives that bridge the gap between production, hardware, broadcast engineering, and our software groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and organize across multiple stakeholders and clients for the smooth execution of live-streaming events
  • Collaborate with contractors and in-house engineers for transmission planning
  • Establish and maintain relationships with satellite and IP transmission vendors
  • Establish and maintain relationships with hardware and broadcast companies, including commitment/distribution encoder vendors, closed subtitling gears, and services
  • Ability to create and maintain maps and drawings of venue systems for communication with all entities
  • Act as a central resource for engineering and production, working closely with teams to develop and implement technical plans that align with Netflix's creative and technical goals, often managing concurrent schedules
  • Responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and reporting audio, video, and system issues
  • Monitor and manage cloud-based and hardware-based video infrastructure, providing analysis and remediation of any issues in the video workflow
  • Develop, form, and advance ground ingest capabilities, including signal acquisition, analysis, validation, and normalization
  • Monitor the industry for emerging technologies, identifying trends to keep Netflix live on the cutting edge
  • Work closely with teams to enable new feature development by understanding what the feature means for overall operations and how to make it work at scale
  • Be available on launch days at the Network Operations Center (NOC) or ground ingest facilities as required
  • Ability to work with flexible hours based on the live events schedule
  • Must have flexibility to travel for scheduled live events

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 5+ years of transmission remote operations experience (ideally network level) in a coordination or management role
  • Strong understanding of digital audio/video fundamentals, compression technologies, distribution networks, and related technologies like Multicast and Unicast video distribution, MPEG Video (2, 4, and HEVC), and ESNI signaling, closed captions, satellite video distribution, and ad stitching
  • Proficient in Video and Audio Compression technology
  • Understanding of the details of remote production and the on-site technical operation
  • Knowledge of remote production facilities and hardware vendors
  • Deep understanding of MVPD-based linear ecosystem and working knowledge of OTT video distribution, engagement technology, and architecture
  • Ability to assess and analyze video and audio quality
  • Experience with on-premise video acquisition with partners or co-location facilities

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure
  • Experience with at least one programming language (Java, Go, Python)
  • Experience in Unix (or Unix-based systems), shell scripting, and good SQL knowledge
  • Experience with web technologies and distributed systems with microservices architecture
