Job Title: Youth Support Worker

Hours: 16 hours per week

Reports To: Assistant Executive Director & Executive Director

Location: SHYFT Youth Services, 6 Trinity Place, Yarmouth

Job Summary:

The Support Worker is responsible for providing direct support to at-risk and homeless youth within the community. This role involves working closely with youth on their individualized support plans, offering guidance and assistance in accessing services, and fostering a safe and inclusive environment. The Support Worker will collaborate with other staff members, community partners, and service providers to ensure that the needs of the youth are met in a holistic and compassionate manner.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Support:

  • Build trusting relationships with youth, providing emotional support and practical assistance as needed.
  • Assist youth with their individualized support plans, focusing on the unique needs and goals of each youth.
  • Assist youth in accessing services such as housing, education, employment, healthcare, and mental health support.
  • Advocate on behalf of youth with service providers, government agencies, and other organizations.

Program Implementation:

  • Provide one-on-one and group support, facilitating discussions and activities that promote personal growth, resilience, and empowerment.

Case Management:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of interactions, support plans, and progress for each youth.
  • Participate in team meetings, and other collaborative efforts to ensure comprehensive support for youth.

Community Engagement:

  • Collaborate with community partners, including schools, social services, and other youth-serving organizations, to coordinate support and resources.
  • Represent SHYFT in community meetings, events, and outreach activities to raise awareness of the services offered and advocate for the needs of at-risk youth.

Crisis Intervention:

  • Provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution as needed, ensuring the safety and well-being of youth.
  • Respond to emergency situations, following established protocols and procedures.

Confidentiality and Professionalism:

  • Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with youth, staff, and community partners.
  • Adhere to SHYFT’s policies and procedures, including those related to privacy, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Diploma or degree in Social Work, Youth Work, Psychology, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience working with at-risk or homeless youth in a support or advocacy role.
  • Experience in crisis intervention and case management is an asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with and support youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to youth.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overnights and weekends.
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.

Working Conditions:

  • The Support Worker will work at the SHYFT location only. The role may involve exposure to challenging situations and requires emotional resilience and a commitment to supporting youth in difficult circumstances.
