Position Summary & Responsibilities
To fully support the facility in its mission of exercising safe and effective control of inmates, managing offenders in the community, and in all its efforts in transforming offenders to become law-abiding citizens, keeping in view the overall contribution to public safety, by providing quality reading materials and information to meet the educational, recreational, legal and other information needs of inmates, with focus on inducing positive change in their value system. To provide offenders in custody with a similar range of services to those found in public libraries in the outside community and to facilitate in practical ways the smooth transition to their usage of such services on release, as a means of encouraging them to adopt a positive role in society.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: The candidate is responsible for the overall supervision of the inmate library and their library assistant, ascertaining that the library is maintained in a clean and orderly manner. The librarian performs a variety of functions that aid in the circulation of books, periodicals, legal documents and access to needed information as well as programming and control of the database, which lists library books and patrons. Assists inmates directly and by correspondence in recommending sources of information. Spearheads projects for acquisition of grant funds. Monitors censorship of library materials in accordance with facility policies. In addition, coordinates the activities of the East Unit library. Evaluates books and other materials to determine subject matter for proper classification, reviews new books and studies publisher lists. Orders books, periodicals, pamphlets, binding materials, and library operational supplies. The ECF library is associated with Central Kansas Library System and the librarian is responsible for coordinating activity with other libraries within the organization.

Qualifications
Licensing & Certification: Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Sciences. Knowledge of professional principles, procedures and techniques of library science. Ability to use and explain all library facilities including catalogs, guides, library database and computerized library system. Ability to help inmates with library problems. Ability to communicate ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

Selection Process: Applicants selected for an interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior-based interview questions. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver's License.
