Job Overview

This is a unique opportunity for a talented and dedicated Deaf Education Interpreter to make a meaningful difference in the lives of hearing-impaired students across our district. As a key member of our educational support team, you will provide interpreting and other support services, facilitating communication among students, teachers, and other personnel. Your expertise in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and assistive devices will be essential in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality interpreting services for hearing-impaired students, ensuring effective communication with teachers, peers, and other school personnel.
  • Facilitate note-taking and other support services as needed, promoting student engagement and understanding.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other educators to develop and implement individualized education plans, tailored to the unique needs of each hearing-impaired student.
  • Instruct hearing-impaired students in sign language, promoting language development and cultural awareness.
  • Train students in the use of assistive devices, such as TTY, to enhance their communication and independence.
  • Provide tutoring in content areas, supporting students in achieving their academic goals.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in deaf education, attending professional development opportunities and workshops to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Essential Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with a strong foundation in deaf education and American Sign Language.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License, with a willingness to travel to different school locations as needed.
  • Certification by Registration of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), demonstrating your expertise and commitment to the field.
  • A score of 4.0 or better on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment, or a passing score on the Educational Interpreters Knowledge Assessment, showcasing your interpreting skills and knowledge.
  • One year of interpreting experience, preferably in an educational setting, with a strong understanding of deaf culture and the needs of hearing-impaired students.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of deaf education, including American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English, and Signing Exact English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an interpreter preparation program, demonstrating your advanced knowledge and skills in deaf education and interpreting.
  • Experience working with students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities, with a strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
  • Familiarity with assistive devices and technologies, such as TTY, and a willingness to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends.
