Experienced and Passionate SAT Tutor for Established Local Firm in Westport, CT - Competitive Hourly Rate and Opportunities for Growth
Introduction to Our Company and the Role
We are a professional college planning firm based in Connecticut, dedicated to providing high-quality educational solutions to students in grades 9-12. Our team is composed of experienced educators from around the country, and we take pride in our collegial and professional work environment. We are now seeking an experienced and passionate SAT tutor to join our team, working closely with students to understand their unique learning styles and create customized lesson plans that support their individual academic goals.
About Our Approach and Philosophy
Our fundamental belief is that children learn best in the context of supportive relationships. We are committed to helping students better understand how they learn and how they can take ownership of that learning. Our proprietary approach to standardized test preparation is influenced by the founders' collective experience working in cognitive science at Yale University. This method focuses on teaching critical thinking, applied reasoning, and problem-solving strategies, rather than relying on rote memorization or practice questions. By emphasizing effective strategies for gathering, sequencing, categorizing, and classifying information, we help students develop the skills they need to reason, solve problems, make inferences, and draw conclusions.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet with a cohort of students one-on-one to teach test prep skills, with a minimum of 8 hours per week
- Collaborate with the Director of Test Prep to generate and execute specific plans for each student, and attend client-specific case review meetings
- Interact with instructors from different departments, including Educational Therapy, Academic Instruction, and College Advising, to discuss shared students in your caseload
- Work at least 2 days per week, with priority given to candidates who are willing to work one weekend day
Essential and Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree, 5+ years of experience in coaching for standardized exams, and content areas related to standardized testing in a competitive metropolitan market. You should be proficient in providing instruction for both verbal and quantitative portions of the SAT and ACT. Preference will be given to candidates who have had experience working with students with diagnosed learning differences and accommodations on standardized testing. Additionally, you should be computer-savvy, have exceptional communication skills, and attention to detail, with the ability to thrive and demonstrate confidence in a fast-paced environment.
Skills and Competencies Required for Success
- Intimate knowledge of both the SAT and ACT, including what these tests assess and why a student might be advised to take one test over the other
- Ability to pass a background check and have reliable transportation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and colleagues
- Flexibility and adaptability, with a willingness to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
