About the Position

The Safety Management System (SMS) Manager for Technical Operations will be responsible for leading the development, implementation, and sustainability of safety and compliance programs, investigating safety events, and ensuring that all team members are well-versed in SMS principles. Key Responsibilities

  • Own the implementation and continuous improvement of United's Safety Management System (SMS) within the Technical Operations division, ensuring it aligns with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the division's SMS champion, driving hazard identification and risk mitigation strategies across various Tech Ops groups to ensure a proactive approach to safety.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and sustainability of SMS, Human Factors, and safety/compliance programs, ensuring they are integrated and effective.
  • Investigate safety and regulatory non-compliance events, perform root cause analysis, and implement risk mitigation strategies to prevent recurrence, ensuring that lessons learned are shared across the organization.
  • Integrate SMS data with other safety initiatives such as Line Operational Safety Audits (LOSA) and Tech Ops Safety Action Programs (TSAP) to ensure a comprehensive approach to safety management.
  • Act as the primary SMS Tech Ops liaison, engaging with industry forums and the FAA CMO on SMS matters, staying abreast of industry developments and best practices.
  • Mentor and train team members to ensure compliance and understanding of SMS principles, promoting a safety-first culture within the Technical Operations division.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in aviation, engineering, or a related field, or four years of technical operations experience, demonstrating a strong foundation in safety management principles.
  • Five years of experience in maintenance inspection of commercial aircraft, with a solid understanding of FAA regulations and United policies, ensuring compliance and adherence to safety standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present reports to FAA and United leaders, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship, ensuring eligibility for employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant license (A&P), indicating advanced knowledge and skills in aircraft maintenance and inspection.
  • ISO certification(s) (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) or experience working within ISO-certified environments, demonstrating familiarity with international safety and quality standards.
  • Five years of experience in maintenance inspection, focusing on commercial aircraft, automotive, or manufacturing industries, providing a broad understanding of safety management systems and practices.
