Core Responsibilities

  • Orchestra Leadership: Conduct the University Symphony Orchestra for concerts, rehearsals, opera productions, and special events; set artistic vision and programming that showcases diverse repertoire and supports student development.
  • String Area Management: Oversee the recruitment, scholarship allocation, and academic progress of string students; develop strategies for program growth and curricular innovation.
  • Teaching & Curriculum Development: Design and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting, string methods, music technology, and applied studio lessons; integrate experiential learning and pedagogical best practices.
  • Summer Music Camp Direction: Serve as Director or Assistant Director of the USD Summer Music Camp, coordinating faculty, curriculum, and student experiences.

Essential Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Performance, Instrumental Conducting, or Music Education (Ph.D. or D.M.A.) – candidates who are ABD (All But Dissertation) will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully leading an orchestra at the university, conservatory, or high‑school level, including evidence of artistic excellence and effective rehearsal techniques.
  • Strong teaching record with positive evaluations, curriculum development experience, and a commitment to student mentorship.
  • Experience in recruitment and scholarship administration for string programs.
  • Ability to teach a range of courses, including conducting, string pedagogy, music technology, and applied studio lessons.
