About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Group Exercise Instructor II to join our team at the Summit Family YMCA. As a key member of our wellness department, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality group exercise classes, promoting a safe and engaging environment for participants, and contributing to the overall success of our fitness programs. Key Responsibilities

As a Group Exercise Instructor II, you will be responsible for:
  • Conducting group exercise classes, including land and water-based programs, in accordance with YMCA standards and best practices.
  • Developing and implementing engaging and effective group exercise programs, including music selection, class set-up, and take-down.
  • Providing education and guidance to participants on fitness-related issues, including THE COACH APPROACH, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Maintaining certifications and continuing education requirements, including CPR/AED, YMCA/ACE Group Exercise Instructor Certification, and other required certifications.
  • Participating in staff meetings, trainings, and wellness cabinet activities to ensure a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Securing music and selecting music suitable for a family setting, and assisting with incident/accident reporting procedures.
  • Logging class attendance in GroupEx PRO and participating in substitute instructor arrangements as needed.
  • Adhering to Metro Atlanta YMCA risk and safety guidelines, best practices, and branch emergency procedures.
  • Providing exceptional customer service and promoting a positive and inclusive environment for participants.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A high school or GED degree, and at least one year of experience in teaching group exercise classes.
  • A current national group exercise certification from a recognized certifying organization, such as ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain certifications, including YMCA/ACE Group Exercise Instructor Certification, CPR/AED, and other required certifications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to facilitate class interaction and socialization.
  • A high degree of human-relations skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and problem-solve.
  • Effective time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong customer-service skills, with a personal commitment to service and hospitality.
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment background check, including a Criminal Record check, Drug Screening, and motor vehicle record (MVR) check.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
  • Experience teaching group strength and conditioning classes, with a certification in YMCA Strength and Conditioning Instructor Certification.
  • Experience teaching Aqua Arthritis programs, with a certification in AEA Arthritis Foundation Program Leader (AFPL) Certification.
  • Specialty certifications, such as Y-Metro Atlanta Pilates, Group Cycling, Active Older Adult, or outside certifications approved by Metro Atlanta Y.
  • Experience working in a fitness or wellness environment, with a strong understanding of fitness-related issues and best practices.
