Job title: Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park - Museum Education Instructor - Seasonal/Year-Round Company: The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Job description: Description Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, part of the Montgomery Parks system, is currently seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual for the part-time, year-round position of Museum Education Instructor. Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park offers programming focused on the Underground Railroad, 19th century African American communities, Quaker heritage, and 19th century agricultural life. The Museum Education Instructor assists the Education Program Manager in coordinating and conducting group tours and public programs for a wide range of audiences, including children, families, and adults - on-site, off-site, and virtually. The Museum Education Instructor works with park staff, volunteers and customers ensuring excellent customer service is provided and tours/programs run smoothly. The Museum Education Instructor must have experience or a strong interest in museum interpretation and educational programming, classroom education, and/or U.S. History to conduct and facilitate tours and programs. We are seeking candidates with proven experience communicating in a clear, professional, and friendly manner both verbally and in writing. This position pays at a rate of $21..00 - $32.00 per hour depending upon qualifications Work Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Schedule may vary, depending upon tour and program schedule Preferred Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, American Studies, African American Studies, Education, or related field. • Experience working in a historical, tourism or cultural related setting. • Knowledge and experience in museum educational programming, teaching or historical interpretation or state/local educational curriculum. • Experience conducting and developing tours and programs in a historical setting. • Proven ability to excel in written and verbal communications, attention to detail, flexibility to multitask and maintain stability under pressure. • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. • Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish especially) are a plus. Examples of Important Duties • Conduct/instruct guided hikes, tours, programs (in-person and virtual) for K-12 school groups, community groups (youth and adults), and individuals visiting the Underground Railroad Experience Trail, Manor House and Woodlawn Museum using interpretive materials provided by Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park. • Assist Education Program Manager in the development and coordination of family and adult programs, events, and special focus tours. Help with creating tour outlines, activity materials, lining up speakers/performers, purchasing materials, directing staff/volunteers, set-up/breakdown, and other behind-the-scenes tasks. • Create, conduct/instruct new tours, programs and correlating learning materials for homeschoolers and scouts utilizing appropriate curriculum requirements. Develop tour/program internal training materials. • Work with Education Program Manager to develop and enhance K-12 school tours/programs and develop teacher resources utilizing state curriculum standards and meeting educator needs. • Work in the Visitor Center (April - November). Open/close buildings, answer park patron questions and provide direction, check-in program attendees, ringing up admissions and gift shop sales, answer phone calls, restock brochures and merchandise, as needed assist with cleaning/sanitation of public restrooms and public spaces. • Help answer customer phone calls and emails in a clear, concise, and helpful manner. As needed, schedule and confirm group tours, photo permits, business rentals and other WMCP programs. Work cooperatively with Education Program Manager and Site Manager to ensure smooth service delivery. Minimum Qualifications • Must be at least 21 years of age. • Valid Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia driver's license, or the ability to acquire one. • Two years of college course work in a related field or museum studies. • Experience in an educational setting, including but not limited to classroom education. • Experience working with visitors of all ages, including adult and school groups. • Ability and enthusiasm for conducting and facilitating interactive tours and activities. • Knowledge or willingness to learn about American history and lifeways. • Knowledge or willingness to learn about regional plants and animals. Supplemental Information Working Conditions: • Ability to work a regular daytime schedule of Wednesday - Saturday and occasional evenings and weekends is required. • Ability to regularly work onsite/in person with staff, volunteers, and the public. • Ability to regularly walk 3 miles outdoors on a wooded, natural surface hiking trail fields in a variety of weather conditions. • Ability to regularly move between the museum, visitor center, historic buildings, and grounds. • Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up 50 lbs. • Frequent use of multiple technical equipment and software applications. • Ability to provide regular transportation to work, as there is no access to public transportation to this job site. This part-time, year-round position does not qualify for benefits Salary is based on experience. Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees Health Insurance Plans You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period. If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.
