Being the largest and most intensive behavioral intervention of its kind, the U.S. POINTER trial is a ground-breaking and well publicized study designed to evaluate the impact of multiple lifestyle modifications on cognitive function and brain health among older adults without dementia/cognitive impairment at study baseline. Lifestyle modifications will incorporate physical exercise, cognitive training, nutrition and management of vascular risk factors at two levels of intensity. Primary outcomes are repeat cognitive test scores while secondary outcomes include the collection of indices of physical function and cardiometabolic indicators, among others. GROW aims to address these disparities using a community-oriented approach to research, outreach, and health education. GROW will conduct health education and outreach events in communities throughout the Greater Sacramento area; these events are open to all. The events will focus on providing our local communities with information, tips, lessons, activities, and resources to incorporate health practices crucial to brain health and chronic disease prevention. Topics include, but are not limited to nutrition, physical activity, mental health, cardiovascular risk factors, and diabetes, among others. These outreach and education activities aim to bring community wellness to different neighborhoods throughout the Sacramento area.
