Our mission is simple yet profound: to deliver respectful, compassionate, and evidence‑based nursing care that empowers veterans to achieve their greatest possible physical and mental capacities. As a proud State as a Model Employer (SAME), we champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a workplace where every team member feels valued, heard, and motivated to make a difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Direct Patient Care: Assess, monitor, and deliver basic nursing care to assigned veterans in stable conditions, adhering to the Professional Nurses Practice Act and evidence‑based protocols.
  • Supervision and Mentorship: Offer functional supervision to lower‑level Practical Nurses and paraprofessional staff, guiding them in clinical tasks, documentation, and patient communication.
  • Emergency Response: Render timely emergency nursing care for veterans requiring urgent attention outside of regular sick‑call hours, ensuring rapid triage and stabilization.
  • Patient Education & Discharge Planning: Implement patient‑specific teaching plans, covering topics such as diet, prenatal care, family planning, and disease prevention, and assist with coordinated discharge processes.
  • Clinical Documentation: Accurately document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in electronic health records, including psychosocial screenings, nursing notes, and treatment plans.
  • Medication Administration: Safely administer prescribed medications, monitor therapeutic effects, and report any adverse reactions to the supervising Registered Nurse.
  • Immunizations & Preventive Care: Assess immunization status, provide appropriate vaccines, and conduct health counseling on tuberculosis control, venereal disease prevention, and other public‑health initiatives.
  • Laboratory and Diagnostic Support: Perform point‑of‑care tests such as hemoglobin, lead screening, urinalysis, and vision/hearing assessments, and interpret results for further action.
  • Wound Care Management: Apply, change, and monitor dressings according to established protocols, ensuring optimal healing environments and infection control.
  • Medical Equipment Utilization: Operate equipment such as intermittent and continuous suction machines, enteral feeding pumps, and basic respiratory support devices.
  • Care Coordination: Facilitate referrals and schedule appointments for dental, eye, speech, language, and auditory services, ensuring comprehensive interdisciplinary care.
  • Quality Improvement Participation: Contribute to monthly nursing reports, chart audits, and safety reviews, helping to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences, and huddles, sharing insights and fostering a cohesive care environment.
  • Professional Development: Actively seek learning opportunities, attend in‑service trainings, and stay current with best practices in veteran healthcare.

Essential Qualifications

  • Licensure: Valid Louisiana Practical Nursing license or a multi‑state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of practical nursing experience, preferably in acute, long‑term, or veteran‑focused care settings.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program.
  • Technical Competence: Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic medical equipment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with a demonstrated capacity to convey complex information clearly to patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess changing patient conditions, prioritize tasks, and intervene appropriately in emergent situations.
  • Professionalism: Strong ethical standards, confidentiality adherence, and a commitment to the values of respect, compassion, and service to veterans.
