Our technology team is driven by a relentless mission to turn bold ideas into tradable realities, empowering traders, investors, and partners across the globe. From high‑speed order routing to sophisticated analytics, we build systems that power the modern capital markets ecosystem. By joining us, you become part of a community that values curiosity, collaboration, and the continuous pursuit of excellence.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Full Stack Software Engineer with deep expertise in .NET, C#, and modern front‑end technologies to lead the design, development, and delivery of high‑performance, real‑time trading, analytics, and risk‑management platforms. This is a remote position with the flexibility to work from anywhere, while staying closely connected to our Chicago‑based headquarters and cross‑functional teams worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architectural Leadership: Define and evolve the technical roadmap for large‑scale, distributed systems that support new asset classes, regions, and trading models.
  • Full‑Stack Development: Write clean, testable, and performant code across the stack – from C#/.NET services and PostgreSQL data stores to Vue/TypeScript front‑ends and WPF desktop clients.
  • System Reliability & Performance: Champion best practices for reliability, monitoring, and optimization to ensure ultra‑low latency and high availability.
  • Agile Practices: Drive Agile ceremonies, continuous integration, and delivery pipelines using tools such as Git, Jenkins, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Mentorship & Coaching: Guide junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and help onboard new talent, fostering a culture of learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with product owners, traders, and support teams to gather requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and deliver solutions that exceed expectations.
  • Technical Evaluation: Participate in interview panels, assess candidate technical fit, and contribute to building a high‑performing engineering organization.
  • Innovation & Experimentation: Explore emerging technologies – such as AI/ML, distributed computing, and advanced data retrieval – and assess their applicability to our platform.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Produce comprehensive technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and knowledge‑base articles to ensure ongoing team success.

Essential Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a senior or principal capacity driving architecture and large‑scale system design.
  • Expertise in C# and the .NET Framework, including .NET Core/5/6+, with a solid grasp of object‑oriented and functional programming paradigms.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL (PostgreSQL)**, including query optimization, schema design, and stored procedures.
  • Hands‑on experience with modern front‑end technologies: JavaScript, TypeScript, Vue.js, and WPF.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering technical growth and collaborative culture.
  • Experience working in Agile environments, with a proven track record of delivering high‑quality software in iterative cycles.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, with a passion for debugging complex, performance‑critical issues.
  • Strong communication abilities – capable of translating technical concepts for both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline (or equivalent practical experience).

Preferred Qualifications & Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Direct experience with real‑time trading systems, order routing, market data distribution, or related financial market infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with equity, options, or futures trading front‑ends and the associated regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of distributed computing patterns (microservices, message queues, event sourcing) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Exposure to AI/ML techniques for analytics, anomaly detection, or predictive modeling.
  • Experience with DevOps tools: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure‑as‑code.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate, or equivalent.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to decompose complex business problems into scalable technical solutions.
  • Performance Engineering: Expertise in profiling, latency analysis, and optimization strategies for high‑throughput systems.
  • Test‑Driven Development (TDD) & Automation: Commitment to writing robust unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working across geographically dispersed, multifunctional teams.
  • Customer Focus: Experience interacting with end‑users or support teams to gather feedback and refine product features.
  • Continuous Learning: Keeps abreast of industry trends, emerging frameworks, and best practices.

At Cboe, your career path is shaped by your ambitions and the impact you make. As a Principal Engineer you will:

  • Lead high‑visibility, mission‑critical projects that directly influence market dynamics.
  • Access a robust internal learning platform offering courses on cloud architecture, advanced C# patterns, AI/ML integration, and more.
  • Participate in industry conferences, hackathons, and technical symposiums – with company sponsorship.
  • Potentially transition into senior leadership roles such as Director of Engineering or Chief Technology Officer as you demonstrate strategic vision.
  • Engage in cross‑domain initiatives, working alongside data scientists, quantitative analysts, and product strategists.
