Why Join CarolinaEast Health System?

CarolinaEast Health System stands as a beacon of high‑quality, compassionate care along the vibrant Coastal Carolina region. With a flagship 350‑bed medical center that blends cutting‑edge technology with a warm, community‑focused atmosphere, CarolinaEast delivers an expansive suite of inpatient and outpatient services that rival those of the nation’s largest hospitals. Our network spans four counties, offering specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, and many more disciplines. Behind every patient story is a team of 2,600 dedicated professionals—doctors, nurses, administrators, and support staff—who share a common mission: to provide world‑class care while nurturing the personal connections that make our community feel like family.

In today’s increasingly digital world, the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of clinical documentation are more critical than ever. As a Remote Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CEP) focused on orthopedics, you will be a pivotal member of the care continuum, ensuring that every surgical note, consult, and progress report reflects the highest standards of precision. Your work directly supports physicians, improves patient outcomes, and upholds the regulatory compliance that protects both the institution and the people we serve.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated, detail‑oriented, Remote Certified Medical Transcriptionist with a specialty in orthopedics to join our growing team. In this role you will transform dictated audio files into clear, accurate, and fully formatted medical records that become an essential part of each patient’s health journey. You will work remotely, leveraging a secure, HIPAA‑compliant platform to collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff across the CarolinaEast network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transcribe and edit a high volume of orthopedic dictations—including operative reports, clinic notes, discharge summaries, and referral letters—ensuring flawless grammar, punctuation, and medical terminology.
  • Validate accuracy by cross‑checking transcription against source audio, electronic health record (EHR) data, and relevant coding guidelines (ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS).
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission standards, and internal policies for confidentiality, security, and documentation quality.
  • Collaborate remotely with orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, and clinical documentation specialists to resolve ambiguities, clarify terminology, and confirm clinical intent.
  • Utilize transcription software (e.g., Dragon Medical, Express Scribe) and advanced word‑processing tools to maximize efficiency while preserving a minimum typing speed of 60 words per minute.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on completed reports, applying standardized checklists and participating in peer‑review sessions to continuously raise the bar for transcript excellence.
  • Provide feedback to physicians on dictation clarity, suggesting improvements that reduce turnaround time and enhance record accuracy.
  • Stay current with orthopedic terminology, emerging procedures, and documentation best practices through ongoing education and professional development.
  • Document workflow metrics including turnaround time, error rates, and case volumes, contributing data that informs process improvement initiatives.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of a two‑year secretarial sciences (medical) program, or equivalent coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical office practice.
  • Certification: Certified Electronic Transcriptionist (CET) or Certified Electronic Professional (CEP) credential is strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of professional medical transcription experience, with a demonstrable focus on orthopedic or musculoskeletal specialties.
  • Typing Proficiency: Proven typing speed of at least 60 words per minute with high accuracy (error rate ≤ 2%).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Windows operating systems (Windows 10/11 preferred), transcription software, and standard Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with EHR platforms such as Epic or Cerner is a plus.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional ability to spot inconsistencies, typographical errors, and medical terminology inaccuracies.
  • Communication Skills: Impeccable verbal, written, and interpersonal abilities, enabling clear dialogue with clinicians and team members.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrated reliability, confidentiality, and a strong work ethic in a remote work environment.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Assets

  • Advanced certification in orthopedic transcription or a related specialty.
  • Experience with speech‑recognition technology (e.g., Dragon Medical One) and dictation workflow optimization.
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines and insurance billing processes in orthopedics.
  • Completed continuing education courses in healthcare documentation improvement, HIPAA compliance, or health informatics.
  • Familiarity with remote collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, or Zoom, and the ability to adapt quickly to new digital platforms.

Core Skills and Competencies for Success

  • Medical Vocabulary Mastery: Deep understanding of orthopedic anatomy, common surgical procedures (e.g., arthroscopy, joint replacement), and related terminology.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret clinical context, resolve ambiguous dictation, and produce concise, clinically meaningful documentation.
  • Time Management: Efficiently prioritize multiple transcription assignments while meeting strict turnaround targets (typically within 24–48 hours).
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast‑changing environment, integrating new software updates, workflow tools, and industry standards without disruption.
  • Quality Focus: Commitment to delivering error‑free records, contributing to the organization’s overall patient safety and compliance objectives.
  • Self‑Motivation: Ability to work independently from a home office while staying engaged with the larger team through regular virtual check‑ins.
  • Ethical Judgment: Strong sense of confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards governing patient information.
