The Role – Remote Medical Writer (San Francisco & Nationwide Home‑Based)

This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere in the United States while remaining connected to our vibrant San Francisco office and the broader Fishawack network.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do Every Day

  • Therapeutic Area Expertise Development: Build and maintain deep knowledge in assigned therapeutic domains (e.g., oncology, rare diseases, immunology), ensuring every piece of communication reflects the latest scientific advancements and market insights.
  • Editorial Excellence & Mentorship: Edit and reference content produced by junior writers, provide constructive feedback, and act as a subject‑matter mentor, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high‑quality output.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement: Represent Fishawack at client advisory boards, speaker‑training sessions, and strategic meetings, delivering professional presentations and fostering strong, trust‑based relationships.
  • Project Management Collaboration: Partner closely with Publication Managers, Project Managers, Review Specialists, and Editorial Assistants to define project scopes, track milestones, and ensure seamless delivery of deliverables across print, video, and web‑based platforms.
  • Business Development Support: Contribute to proposal development, scientific brainstorming sessions, and strategic planning for new client opportunities, leveraging your expertise to shape compelling, data‑driven narratives that win business.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Stay informed about evolving regulatory guidelines affecting medical communications, ensuring all content complies with industry standards while maintaining scientific integrity.
  • Travel (Limited): Participate in up to ten (10) face‑to‑face events per year—including congresses, advisory board meetings, and client workshops—when in‑person presence adds strategic value.

Essential Qualifications – What We Require

  • Advanced Degree: Ph.D., PharmD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree in a life‑science discipline (e.g., molecular biology, pharmacology, clinical research).
  • Professional Experience: 1–7 years of hands‑on medical writing experience within a medical communications or medical education agency, with proven success in developing scientific publications such as posters, abstracts, manuscripts, and presentation materials.
  • Publication Planning Exposure: Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of publication plans, aligning scientific output with client product lifecycles and therapeutic strategies.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and advanced literature‑search skills using PubMed, Embase, and other scientific databases.
  • Style Mastery: Thorough familiarity with the American Medical Association (AMA) style guide, citation standards, and medical terminology.
  • Communication Acumen: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to translate dense scientific concepts into clear, audience‑appropriate language.
  • Independent & Collaborative Work Style: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision while thriving in a team‑oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications – What Sets You Apart

  • Experience (3–5 years) in developing comprehensive scientific publications for high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical healthcare marketing principles and the ability to integrate scientific content with broader commercial strategies.
  • Familiarity with digital medical education platforms, video scripting, and e‑learning authoring tools.
  • Previous exposure to regulatory submission documents (e.g., Clinical Study Reports) even though the role is non‑regulatory.
