Role Overview

The Remote Medical/Surgical Transcriptionist – Radiology is responsible for converting audio dictations from radiologists, surgeons, and other health‑care providers into accurate, timely, and formatted written reports. This position demands a blend of clinical knowledge, linguistic precision, and technical proficiency. You will serve as a crucial bridge between voice and record, ensuring that every nuance of the original dictation is captured faithfully while adhering to legal, ethical, and institutional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transcribe Radiology Dictations: Listen to and accurately transcribe a wide range of radiology reports—including X‑ray, CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, interventional radiology, and nuclear medicine—into clear, grammatically correct documents.
  • Utilize Transcription Software: Operate advanced transcription platforms (e.g., Nuance PowerMic, Dragon Medical) to enhance efficiency, insert standardized terminology, and apply real‑time quality checks.
  • Apply Clinical Knowledge: Leverage deep understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and radiologic imaging conventions to interpret and clarify ambiguous phrasing.
  • Proofread and Edit: Conduct meticulous proofreading to eliminate typographical errors, verify numerical data (e.g., measurements, dates), and ensure consistency with Mayo Clinic style guides.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: Safeguard all patient information in compliance with HIPAA, state regulations, and Mayo Clinic privacy policies; securely manage digital files and electronic health record (EHR) interfaces.
  • Adhere to Turn‑Around Time (TAT) Goals: Meet or exceed established TAT benchmarks, typically delivering completed reports within 30 minutes of receipt for urgent studies and within 2 hours for routine cases.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Teams: Communicate with radiologists, nurses, and IT support to resolve ambiguities, clarify dictation content, and implement workflow improvements.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement: Participate in audits, peer reviews, and feedback sessions to elevate transcription accuracy and contribute to best‑practice guidelines.
  • Document Management: Ensure proper filing, version control, and archiving of all transcribed reports within Mayo Clinic’s EHR system.
  • Respond to Inquiries Promptly: Address internal queries from physicians, coding staff, and administrators regarding transcription content or formatting in a timely manner.

Essential Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of professional medical transcription experience, with a proven record of handling radiology or surgical dictations.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited medical transcription program or equivalent certification (e.g., CMT or RMT) is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to operate transcription software, EHR interfaces, and standard office productivity tools (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
  • Language Skills: Exceptional command of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; ability to produce error‑free documents under time pressure.
  • Clinical Knowledge: Solid grasp of medical terminology, especially radiology‑specific vocabulary, anatomy, and procedural descriptions.
  • Attention to Detail: Proven capacity to spot inconsistencies, verify numerical data, and maintain high accuracy rates (≥98%).
  • Professionalism: Strong work ethic, self‑discipline for remote work, and commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification from the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) – Certified Radiology Transcriptionist (CRT) or similar credential.
  • Experience with voice recognition editing platforms (e.g., Dragon NaturallySpeaking).
  • Knowledge of coding systems (CPT, ICD‑10) and ability to flag potential coding issues.
  • Prior exposure to Mayo Clinic’s EHR (Epic) or comparable integrated health record platforms.
  • Demonstrated participation in quality‑improvement initiatives, peer‑review programs, or transcription mentorship.

Core Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret complex medical dictations, discern context, and resolve ambiguities without compromising accuracy.
  • Time Management: Skilled at prioritizing multiple dictations while meeting stringent turnaround expectations.
  • Communication: Clear, concise written communication and professional interaction with physicians and support staff via email, chat, or ticketing systems.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating evolving technologies, updated terminology, and changing workflow procedures.
  • Team Orientation: Collaborative mindset, open to feedback, and willing to share best practices with peers.
  • Ethical Judgment: Deep respect for patient privacy, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
