About Microsoft’s Sky Blue Space Division

Microsoft is not only a technology giant—it is a catalyst for global transformation. Within the broader Microsoft Mission and Technology (SMT) organization, the Sky Blue Space team is pioneering the next frontier of cloud‑enabled space missions. From ground‑station integration to satellite‑to‑cloud data pipelines, the division engineers cutting‑edge solutions that power government agencies, research institutions, and commercial partners worldwide. As part of this ambitious ecosystem, you will contribute to a mission‑critical platform that connects the physical universe with Microsoft’s intelligent cloud, enabling real‑time analytics, secure communications, and unprecedented scalability.

Why This Role is a Career‑Defining Opportunity

  • A direct impact on high‑visibility government and commercial space projects.
  • Exposure to a broad spectrum of technologies—cloud infrastructure (IaaS, PaaS), quantum‑ready compute, AI/ML pipelines, and secure networking.
  • Mentorship from senior technical leaders who have built platforms used by millions.
  • Opportunities to publish research, present at industry conferences, and influence standards within the aerospace community.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

As a Remote Full‑Stack Software Engineer on the Sky Blue Space platform, you will be expected to:

  • Collaborate in cross‑functional Agile teams with product managers, hardware engineers, and security specialists to translate mission requirements into scalable software architectures.
  • Implement robust APIs and SDKs that empower external developers and partners to build custom applications on top of the Sky Blue platform.
  • Automate testing and validation pipelines to ensure compliance with strict government security standards (e.g., FedRAMP, DoD IL5).
  • Identify and mitigate architectural gaps such as latency bottlenecks, data integrity vulnerabilities, and scalability constraints.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between Microsoft’s internal cloud engineering teams and external stakeholders, presenting solution roadmaps and status updates.
  • Champion best practices in code quality, CI/CD, observability, and documentation, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Participate in on‑call rotation to provide rapid incident response for mission‑critical services, ensuring uninterrupted service for global partners.

Essential Qualifications (Must‑Have)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Minimum 2+ years of professional software development experience with a strong command of at least one modern programming language (C#, Java, Python, or Go).
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying cloud‑native solutions on Microsoft Azure, including familiarity with Azure Functions, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and Azure Service Bus.
  • Solid understanding of software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms, with an ability to solve complex problems efficiently.
  • Proven ability to acquire and apply new technical skills quickly, evidenced by recent project work or certifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of translating technical concepts into clear business value for diverse audiences.
  • Eligibility and willingness to undergo Microsoft’s Cloud Background Check and any required government security clearances.

Preferred (But Not Required) Qualifications

  • Experience with satellite communication protocols (e.g., CCSDS, Space Packet), ground‑station software, or related aerospace systems.
  • Hands‑on exposure to Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or Pulumi.
  • Knowledge of quantum‑ready computing concepts and emerging Azure Quantum services.
  • Previous involvement in government IT contracts or projects that required compliance with NIST, FedRAMP, or DoD security frameworks.
  • Familiarity with open‑source frameworks (e.g., .NET Core, Apache Kafka, Prometheus) and contributions to community repositories.
  • Professional certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals.
