Position Overview
What You’ll Be Doing
Reporting to the Fitness Director/Coordinator, you will design, deliver, and continuously improve engaging line‑dance group classes that are safe, effective, and delightful for participants of all ages and fitness levels. Your role will be instrumental in expanding the reach of our Greater Ridgecrest branch’s group exercise programming, building member loyalty, and fostering a culture of inclusion and active living.
Core Responsibilities
- Class Preparation & Delivery: Arrive (virtually) early to set up the digital class space, test audio/visual equipment, and review the day’s playlist and choreography to guarantee a seamless start.
- Creative Choreography & Music Curation: Design original line‑dance routines that blend classic steps with contemporary moves, selecting music that aligns with YMCA guidelines and energizes participants.
- Safety & Compliance: Demonstrate proper technique, cue participants clearly, and enforce safety protocols; report any suspicious activity or safety concerns according to YMCA policies.
- Equipment & Facility Stewardship: Maintain virtual and physical equipment (e.g., microphones, music files, handouts); ensure all resources are organized, sanitized, and stored correctly after each session.
- Member Engagement & Retention: Build rapport with class members, provide personalized encouragement, and track attendance trends to identify opportunities for increased participation.
- Professional Representation: Uphold the YMCA’s standards of dress, demeanor, and conduct; serve as a positive role model for the SMART (Safety, Motivation, Attitude, Respect, Teamwork) philosophy.
- Continuous Learning: Attend all staff meetings, in‑house trainings, and special promotions; pursue additional certifications and professional development opportunities.
- Backup Coverage: Take responsibility for covering your own classes if unforeseen circumstances arise; collaborate with the Fitness Director only as a last resort.
- Community Outreach: Participate in outreach events, virtual workshops, and promotional initiatives that showcase the line‑dance program to new audiences.
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- Demonstrated ability to teach at least one group‑exercise format in a safe, effective, and engaging manner—line dancing preferred.
- Current knowledge of exercise physiology, class structure, cueing techniques, and choreography principles.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate movements clearly and motivate participants of diverse backgrounds.
- Positive attitude, self‑motivation, and the capacity to work independently in a remote environment.
- Physical stamina and agility to lead high‑energy classes for extended periods.
- Commitment to obtaining CPR, AED, and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
- Willingness to complete YMCA‑provided trainings (e.g., Foundation of Listen First, Orientation to Healthy Living, Principles of Member Health and Wellness) within the first 90 days.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Certified fitness instructor credentials (e.g., ACE, NASM, AFAA) or progress toward certification.
- Experience teaching line dance, country western, or other dance‑based fitness formats.
- Familiarity with virtual teaching platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or proprietary YMCA software).
- Previous experience working in community‑center or nonprofit fitness environments.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt choreography for varying fitness levels, including seniors and individuals with mobility challenges.
- Proficiency in basic audio‑visual troubleshooting and digital content creation.
- Evidence of community involvement, volunteerism, or leadership in wellness initiatives.
