Position Overview – Night‑Shift Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

We are seeking a motivated, skilled, and compassionate Licensed Practical Nurse to join our Wilkes‑Barre Long‑Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) team on the night shift (11 pm – 7 am). This full‑time, 8‑hour position offers a unique blend of on‑site patient care and remote flexibility, allowing you to balance professional responsibilities with personal commitments. If you thrive in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment and are eager to make a meaningful impact on the lives of medically complex patients, this opportunity is for you.

Key Responsibilities – Deliver Exceptional Night‑Time Patient Care

  • Direct Patient Care: Provide bedside nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), including medication administration (oral, IV, subcutaneous), vital sign monitoring, and wound management.
  • Therapeutic Procedures: Perform ostomy care, nasogastric (NG) and gastrostomy tube feedings, urinary catheter maintenance, tracheostomy and ventilator support, and specimen collection (blood, urine, sputum).
  • Documentation & Reporting: Accurately chart all assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR) in a timely manner; update care plans and communicate changes to the RN and attending physician.
  • Care Coordination: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including physical therapists, dietitians, social workers, and case managers—to develop comprehensive discharge plans and educate patients/families on post‑hospital care.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to infection control standards, safe medication practices, and hospital policies; ensure proper handling of equipment and emergency response protocols.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Guide and motivate unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) and student nurses to deliver high‑quality care; serve as a role model for professionalism and compassion.

Essential Qualifications – What You Must Bring

  • Licensure: Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license in Pennsylvania (or the state where the facility is located).
  • Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred but not required.
  • Education: Completion of an accredited practical nursing program (Diploma or Associate Degree).
  • Experience: Minimum of one year of inpatient medical‑surgical nursing experience is desirable; however, enthusiastic new graduates with strong clinical foundations are also encouraged to apply.
  • Clinical Skills: Proficiency in medication administration, vital sign assessment, wound care, NG/gastrostomy feeding, catheter care, and basic respiratory support.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey complex medical information clearly to patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess patient status, recognize early signs of clinical deterioration, and initiate appropriate interventions or escalations.

Preferred Qualifications – Extras That Set You Apart

  • Experience in critical care, emergency department, or ventilator management.
  • Two or more years of direct patient care in a skilled nursing or LTACH setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or NextGen.
  • Additional certifications such as Wound Care, IV Therapy, or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • Demonstrated involvement in quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, or nursing education programs.

Core Skills & Competencies – Foundations for Success

  • Patient‑Centric Care: Empathy, respect, and a commitment to preserving dignity for patients across all ages—pediatric, adult, and geriatric.
  • Organizational Acumen: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently during the night shift, and maintain meticulous documentation.
  • Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective teamwork with RNs, physicians, therapists, and support staff.
