Role Overview – Mathematics Instructor (Full‑Time, Remote)

As a Full‑Time Remote Mathematics Instructor, you will be the driving force behind our students’ success on the ACT, SAT, and beyond. You will design and deliver engaging, small‑group lessons that emphasize core mathematical concepts, critical reasoning, and real‑world applications. Your guidance will empower middle and high‑school learners to develop confidence, improve problem‑solving skills, and achieve scores that open doors to elite colleges.

This position is ideal for educators who value deep learning over short‑term tricks. You will be responsible for tracking progress through our multi‑phase curriculum, customizing lesson plans to meet individual needs, and maintaining professional communication with students, parents, and the broader Vanguard team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Deliver Instruction: Create dynamic, interactive lessons for small core groups (3‑6 students) that align with Vanguard’s curriculum and target ACT/SAT math sections, including Pre‑Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics.
  • Student Progress Monitoring: Utilize our online platform to track each learner’s performance, identify gaps, and implement targeted remediation strategies that promote mastery.
  • Curriculum Development: Contribute to ongoing curriculum enhancements by sharing classroom insights, proposing innovative activities, and integrating real‑world problem sets that inspire curiosity.
  • Professional Communication: Respond promptly to student inquiries, maintain accurate lesson schedules, and provide constructive feedback that reinforces accountability and growth.
  • Mentorship & Guidance: Serve as a trusted mentor, offering academic counseling and emotional support to students navigating the high‑stakes college admissions process.
  • Collaboration: Partner with fellow instructors, college counselors, and essay specialists to ensure a cohesive, holistic preparation experience for each learner.
  • Continuous Learning: Participate in paid training sessions, webinars, and peer‑review workshops to stay current on testing trends, pedagogical best practices, and technology tools.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mathematics, Education, or a related STEM field (Master’s degree preferred but not required).
  • Minimum of 1 + year teaching or tutoring experience in mathematics, ideally within a college‑prep, community‑college, or high‑school setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with ACT and SAT math content, including a strong grasp of Pre‑Algebra through Statistics.
  • Academic excellence reflected by a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Technical competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Reliable high‑speed internet connection and a quiet, dedicated workspace conducive to professional instruction.

Preferred (Nice‑to‑Have) Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the college or community‑college level, showcasing ability to manage diverse learner populations.
  • Advanced certifications in mathematics education or standardized‑test preparation.
  • Experience designing customized lesson plans that incorporate real‑world applications, project‑based learning, or technology‑enhanced activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a dynamic and outgoing personality, and a genuine enthusiasm for mentoring adolescents.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously while thriving in a collaborative, cross‑functional team environment.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and virtual classroom platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Canvas).

Core Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Pedagogical Expertise: Deep understanding of instructional design, formative assessment, and differentiated instruction.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to break down complex math problems, articulate step‑by‑step solutions, and foster critical thinking.
  • Communication: Clear, concise verbal and written communication tailored to teen audiences and their families.
  • Empathy & Patience: Sensitivity to the pressures students face during college admissions, with a supportive coaching mindset.
  • Technology Fluency: Comfort navigating digital whiteboards, screen‑sharing tools, and data‑tracking dashboards.
  • Time Management: Skillful organization of lesson plans, grading, and administrative tasks within a remote work setting.

  • Performance‑Based Advancement: Clear metrics for promotion, including student outcome improvements, peer reviews, and contributions to curriculum innovation.
