Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Open Rank Professor of Chinese Language Studies will play a crucial role in coordinating all aspects of the Chinese language program, including teaching, curriculum development, and program administration. The selected candidate will also direct graduate students in the Chinese language pedagogy program and contribute to the department's research and scholarly activities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching Chinese language courses at all levels, from beginner to advanced, and graduate courses in language pedagogy
  • Coordinating and administering the Chinese language program, including curriculum development, program assessment, and budget management
  • Directing graduate students in the Chinese language pedagogy program and mentoring them in their research and teaching endeavors
  • Conducting research and producing scholarly publications in the field of Chinese language studies, language pedagogy, or linguistics
  • Participating in departmental and school-wide service, including committee work, program development, and community outreach
  • Representing the department and the university at national and international conferences, workshops, and other academic events

Essential and Preferred Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following essential qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Chinese language studies, language pedagogy, linguistics, or a related field
  • Native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English
  • At least two years of experience teaching Chinese language at the college or university level
  • Demonstrated success in teaching Chinese language and culture, with a strong commitment to language pedagogy and student learning
  • An active research record with clear potential for or established record of scholarly excellence (depending on rank)

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Familiarity with language assessment and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines
  • Experience with curriculum development, program administration, and budget management
  • Knowledge of contemporary issues and trends in Chinese language studies, language pedagogy, and linguistics
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including international students and students from underrepresented groups
