Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Unit Secretary to join our team at Elmwood Orthopedic Hospital, located on the Elmwood Campus in New Orleans, LA. As a Unit Secretary, you will play a vital role in supporting the department by assisting with admit, discharge, and transfer functions, processing reservations, managing phones, and following up on patient, family, and staff requests in a timely fashion. This is a full-time, evening shift position that offers a competitive salary and the opportunity to work remotely.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides clerical support for the department, including data entry, information retrieval, and processing reservations
 - Responds to requests from patients, family, and staff, and refers to appropriate personnel as needed
 - Serves as a Patient Experience Ambassador for the unit, ensuring that patients and families receive exceptional care and service
 - Assesses EPIC chart reports to ensure proper unit charges and maintains accurate records
 - Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, method of introduction, and communication style
 - Performs other related duties as required, including maintaining a safe and organized work environment
 
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
 - Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
 - Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information
 - Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally
 - Proficiency with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to the role, and keyboard
 - Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and staff
 - Thorough understanding of current medical terminology
 - Self-directed, with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in difficult situations
 - Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities
 
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following preferred qualifications will be considered an asset:
- Experience in the healthcare industry, particularly in a unit secretary or similar role
 - Previous experience working with EPIC or other electronic health record systems
 - Knowledge of medical terminology and coding principles
