Senior AI Engineer

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-11-03

PHC Global was founded in 2020 by Dr. Charity Dean with the mission to build a commercial-grade global biosecurity intelligence platform operating across commercial, defense, and civilian enterprises. This effort was born from the recognition that technological advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence could generate this entirely new capability at speed and scale to detect major global biorisks such as new disease outbreaks and bioterrorism threats.

PHC Global’s software platform provides anticipatory and predictive intelligence of global biorisks through its proprietary data, AI/ML tools, and unparalleled public health expertise, effectively replacing a significant amount of human vigilance and manual data gathering in order to give organizations easy-to-understand, actionable recommendations.

PHC’s world-class team includes experts in technology, machine learning, epidemiology, and global security. We are a tight-knit team passionately committed to making the world safer from biological risks and face challenges with our core values of humility, optimism, and integrity.

Job Title: Senior AI Engineer
Location: Remote
Type: Full-Time

Summary statement

We are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer who loves solving complex challenges and
making a difference. You’ll join a diverse team of epidemiologists, engineers, data scientists,
front-line disease controllers, and national security practitioners. We are deploying technology to
deliver biothreat intelligence to more rapidly detect, characterize, and attribute emerging
biological threats, including naturally occurring and biologically engineered threats.

You’ll own the vision for expanding our AI capabilities, refine our AI architecture, and develop
forecasting and anomaly-detection models that directly inform critical health and defense
decisions. We value bias toward action, collaboration, continuous learning, empathy, and
making a real-world impact.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine approaches to anomaly detection, correlation, forecasting, and
    modeling/simulation for biological threats
  • Explore both traditional and novel techniques to reveal hidden patterns, potentially with
    some of the following techniques:
    • Use statistical models like ARIMA and Prophet to establish clear baselines for
      trend and seasonality
    • Experiment with deep learning models like LSTMs or TCNs to pick up on subtle
      changes in time series data
    • Detect anomalies that could indicate emerging disease clusters
    • Quantify uncertainty so our partners can make confident, risk-aware decisions
  • Develop RAG and Agentic AI systems for Biological Threat Detection
    • Fine-tune, test, and deploy large language models (LLMs)
    • Design and implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines for
      domain-specific applications
    • Design and implement agentic AI systems to flexibly orchestrate threat-specific
      AI/ML tool chains
    • Optimize prompts and perform context engineering to improve model accuracy
      and performance
    • Use evaluation frameworks to benchmark model accuracy and performance
  • Build pipelines to ingest, clean, and validate structured and unstructured data sources
(sequencing files, sensor feeds, lab reports, case and hospitalization data), ensuring
    high-quality inputs for models
  • Containerize models and services with Docker and Kubernetes, automate deployment,
    and monitor model performance
  • Collaborate with Epidemiologists to build domain specific LLM prompts
  • Work directly with customers to understand their problem space, deploy AI/ML tools, and
iterate with them to ensure their mission needs are met
  • Expect to interact with customers to provide engineering solutions with potential travel to
    on-site interactions with the customer

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field
  • 3+ years building, working with, and shipping ML models in production
  • 5+ years general software development experience
  • Strong understanding and experience in data modeling, algorithms, and data
    transformation techniques
  • Strong Python skills
  • Solid foundation in statistics, probability, and time-series analysis
  • Experience with relational and vector databases
  • Familiarity with AWS and/or GCP
  • Comfortable with Docker, Kubernetes, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and RESTful APIs
  • Experience with RAG architecture and LLM integrations
  • Curious, proactive, and collaborative
  • Excellent communicator, able to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Willingness to embrace moving fast, being insatiably curious, embracing uncertainty and
having a personal desire to improve other peoples’ lives
  • Security clearance-eligible
